Calming

From this morning's Christchurch Press:

"A controversial United States cleric will not appear at Christ Church Cathedral during her visit to New Zealand to calm Anglican tension over gay priests."

You can read the whole article here.

The sentence you quote is ambiguous - how do you interpret it? Why did you choose that particular sentence?

The more interesting sentence is: "Dean Peter Beck said there was no discussion about inviting Jefferts Schori to the cathedral."

Your church is absolutely fascinating!

Hi Alison,
I chose that sentence because I think it gets to the heart of the matter re the visit. While not the words I would use to express the situation I simply offer the view that since our Cathedral in past years has been a site from which or upon which has been generated certain controversies leading to tensions in the Diocese, this is not an occasion to reinvigorate any tension that may be among us.

Yes, my church is fascinating!

I’m on a brief visit to Australia at present, and after asking around a few episcopal contacts it seems the visit to Australia is even more low key - no-one seems to know any details of her visit to Aust. The general feedback is that if asked, the answer will be that her visit is not appreciated at this time and not at all helpful for relationships and dialogue internally.

The silence is deafening, Tim, even from this side of the Tasman :)
