Keeping in touch

Thinking Anglicans is worth a look ... running post excerpts and links to Colin Coward claiming culture of secrecy is preventing gay primates and bishops from being honest about who they are etc ... as well as rounding up speculation and advice about the course of the Primates' Meeting in January. The mess continues is, perhaps, the most neutral description one can give of the Communion situation!

It sounds as if Colin Coward senses that his long campaign, via 'Changing Attitude' and 'Inclusive Church' (largely the same pack, just reshuffled) to remake the Church of England if not the Anglican Communion in a gay image is not likely to succeed, so he hints at the old (and already used) tactic of threatening to unmask the gays in leadership, even suggesting there are 'gay primates' (who are these?). Four factors may account for this change since 2003, when Coward & co. started the 'Inclusive Church' website.
1. The numerical and financial decline of Western Anglicanism is pretty advanced now, and the bigger givers are likely to vote with their feet and their wallets. The dreadful warfare in Tec is well known around the world.
2. Gafcon is bypassing old colonial Anglicanism; Canterbury becomes less relvant with each passing year.
3. The Ordinariate is a new avenue for beleaguered Anglo-Catholics.
4. The Covenant is slowly spreading. Even the liberal-leaning South African Church (a legacy of Tutu's dys in London) wants to be more in step with Africa than 815.
Lessons for NZ here?

I think that you are reading too much into this, Al. Provinces such as Mexico or South Africa may vote for the Covenant for reasons which you may find appalling (eg, because they want to be sure that TEC, ACof C, etc. are not marginalized by the con-evo hordes from the Global South). Remember Franco’s “Fifth Column...”

Quite frankly, I have no problem with “outing” gays who promote bigotry against other gays. Serves them right. If there is a move by some to push TEC, etc. out of the Communion, and that push is supported by closeted primates and other clergy, I would welcome many, many such “outings!”

Mexico is a pretty small church in Anglican terms, South Africa isn't. While Mexico has been basically a franchise of Tec, South Africa goes its own way, and despite liberal and gay elements there, the majority don't want ot be out of step with the great African majority. Personally, I have never likened liberal to fascists, but you may have a point. I have always thought of them rather as romantic anarchists shouting from the ramparts of Fortaleza America (to the 'border crossers': "No pasaron." Hemos pasado.
